Painswick Cottage

Last year, my wife and I travelled to Bristol for a wedding and stayed in a little village called Painswick.

And yes, it's every bit as charming as it sounds. Imagine if the Hobbits from the Shire and the witches of Eastwick had a baby. That would be Painswick!

It's an incredibly quiet place, full of beautiful little cottages, winding streets and an almost eerie stillness. Absolutely stunning, especially when the sun makes an appearance.

I managed to sneak out for a painting session on the morning of the wedding and ended up gifting that painting to the bride and groom. I also took a few photographs to work from when I got home.

This particular painting was created as a demonstration for my students, and it was a wonderfully playful experience. Lots of splashing colour about, twisting and turning the paper, and letting the paint roll and slide across the surface.

There was a method to the madness, though! I was careful to preserve the main mid-value shape, allowing the porch and windows to emerge from all that lovely chaos.

Original Watercolour Painting

Size: approx. 11 × 7.5 inches (27.9 × 19.1 cm)

Painted on Arches 300gsm cold-pressed watercolour paper using Daniel Smith Extra Fine watercolours.

Sold unframed. Any framed images are for illustration purposes only.
