This was the very last painting of my Irish painting retreat, and it holds some particularly fond memories.
I'd set up my easel just outside the hotel entrance, looking out over Courtmacsherry village and the water beyond. Throughout the morning, my students were coming and going, packing their bags and heading off on their journeys home.
It meant I got to say my farewells as I painted, which made the whole experience rather poignant. After spending a week painting, travelling and sharing experiences together, some lovely friendships had formed. It's amazing how quickly those connections can happen.
There's something particularly vibrant about this painting, and I do wonder whether my mood had something to do with it. I was feeling pretty good about how the week had gone, and perhaps that sense of happiness found its way into the colours. They're certainly more lively than usual!
The little cottage featured in the painting had caught the attention of several of my fellow artists during that particularly sunny morning. Its brightly lit walls and the strong shadows cast across them made it a popular subject, and it ended up being painted more than a few times.
A colourful little reminder of a wonderful week, new friendships and a very happy ending to my first Irish retreat.
