This was painted as a demonstration for my students during one of my workshops at Artform in Dunmore East, a beautiful part of the world that I never tire of returning to.
It's not the first time I've painted these wonderful thatched cottages, with the bright sunlight catching their roofs and walls.
What particularly interested me this time was the unusual shape of the woodland rising behind the cottages. I first explored it in my sketchbook, simplifying the shapes and finding ways to connect the trees with the shadows of the buildings.
I then showed my students how I could take that little sketch and recreate the scene on a larger sheet of paper, using a much more playful and expressive approach.
It's a process I really enjoy teaching. Taking something quite complex, simplifying it into a few interesting shapes, and then having a bit of fun with colour and water.
Dunmore East is one of those places I could happily paint year after year. And luckily, thanks to my annual workshops at Artform, I get to do just that!
