This painting was created as a demonstration for my students during one of my painting retreats in the South of France.
We were perched high above the village, looking out over a beautiful jumble of warm ochre rooftops. The sort of view that makes you want to unpack your paints immediately!
One of the highlights of that retreat was a visit to the famous ochre cliffs of Provence, where the natural pigments have been extracted for centuries. It was fascinating to see those incredible yellows, oranges and reds in the landscape itself, colours that have inspired artists for generations.
There's something rather special about painting the rooftops of Provence and then visiting the very landscape that gives us those wonderful earthy pigments.
A lovely reminder of a memorable week spent painting in the French sunshine.
