A damp, overcast day in Courtmacsherry, West Cork. Not everyone's idea of perfect painting weather, but I rather enjoy these conditions!
The rain actually helped create this painting, leaving beautiful little speckles across the paper as the droplets landed in the wet watercolour. Sometimes nature lends a helping hand.
Harbour scenes are among my favourite subjects to paint. The boats, the vertical lines of their masts, and the little cottages tucked away in the background, barely suggested with a few brushstrokes.
What I particularly love about this painting is the granulation and those wonderfully soft, atmospheric edges along the shoreline. If I do say so myself!
There's something about a quiet harbour on a grey winter's day that I find incredibly appealing. All those muted colours, soft shapes and reflections make it a joy to paint.
