Another painting from my retreat in the South of France, created as a demonstration for my students.
This beautiful Provençal valley was framed by the towering walls of an old fort on one side and the mountains rising in the distance on the other.
I'm a bit of a sucker for signposts, particularly red ones! There's something wonderful about introducing a tiny splash of red into a painting dominated by greens. It immediately catches the eye and brings a little spark of life to the scene.
But what I particularly love about this one is how that little signpost helps convey the sheer scale of the landscape. It's such a small detail, almost lost amongst the vast surroundings, yet it gives you a real sense of just how enormous everything is.
Sometimes the smallest things in a painting can do the biggest job!
